The Sickle Solubility test screens for the presence of Hemoglobin S (HbS) in whole blood by using a chemical reduction method that causes HbS to become insoluble, producing a cloudy or turbid solution (positive result) when deoxygenated.
This test is useful for detecting sickle cell trait or disease in older children and adults. Positive screenings should be followed by confirmatory tests like hemoglobin electrophoresis, as the solubility test does not distinguish between trait and disease.
