SHBG is a liver-produced glycoprotein that binds key sex hormones—including testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and estradiol—rendering them inactive when bound.
Measuring SHBG helps evaluate hormonal balance by assessing how much sex hormone is “free” (biologically active) versus “bound” (inactive). For example, low SHBG may raise free testosterone, while high SHBG may reduce hormone availability even if total testosterone is normal.
