Homocysteine is an amino acid normally present in the blood at low levels, metabolized by vitamins B6, B9 (folate), and B12. Elevated levels may signal deficiencies in these B vitamins or disruptions in methylation pathways.
High homocysteine is considered a risk factor for vascular damage, arterial plaque formation, clotting, and cardiovascular disease.
