Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), also known as SGOT, is an enzyme found in the liver, heart, muscles, kidneys, and other tissues. Elevated AST levels may signal injury or stress to those organs, because damaged cells release AST into the bloodstream.
This test is commonly used alongside ALT and other liver function tests to evaluate liver health, muscle damage, or systemic disease. A high AST reading alone is not definitive, but when interpreted together with other markers it provides valuable insight into underlying conditions.
